When it comes to construction software, a common misconception is that it is only suited to large construction companies. But mid-sized companies need just as much visibility and control—especially when projects crop up on short notice and long-term planning isn’t always an option. In these situations, everyone wears multiple hats, and having a system that supports both office staff and on-site crews can make all the difference. That’s exactly why Adolf Dürr GmbH & Co. chose RIB 4.0.

Based in Stuttgart, Adolf Dürr is a family-run construction business specializing in civil engineering and roadworks. Now in its fourth generation and approaching a century in operation, the company offers everything from sewer work and asphalt paving to cable trenching and underground pipeline installation. In addition to its focus on delivering cost-effective solutions for clients, the company prioritizes sustainability—opting for eco-friendly materials and equipment powered by alternative drive technologies.

An all-in-one IT system

Adolf Dürr Managing Directors, Dr. Christian Gromer and Constanze Gromer-Etter, were looking for a single-vendor software system that could form the foundation of their entire IT infrastructure—and ensure long-term viability. The need stemmed from the company’s numerous small construction sites, where one crew frequently hands over to another. Adolf Dürr works under annual construction contracts with energy providers in southern Germany. This often means short-notice work in road and civil construction, with less emphasis on long-term planning than is typical in traditional building projects.

In addition, due to the company’s size, site managers at Adolf Dürr are expected to handle the full spectrum of tasks—from bidding and planning to execution and billing.

“We don’t have a dedicated procurement department or an independent fleet management team,” explains Dr. Gromer. “Our site staff cover all areas, this means that the 13 separate systems we used to rely on were far from efficient,” he adds.

RIB Software delivers transparency and traceability

Dr. Gromer was familiar with RIB Software from his university studies and previous roles, and the company had been using RIB iTWO since 2018. This made RIB 4.0 the natural choice.

As of January 2024, all employees, both in the office and on-site, are actively using RIB 4.0. Various processes, such as automating delivery slips via the DEXPRO document management system, are already integrated. RIB 4.0 also allows connections with DATEV and supports payroll evaluations through DATEV’s LODAS system.

Saving time on and off site

In addition to the six office employees, around 30 site managers, foremen, and supervisors also benefit from the fully integrated IT system. For example, the vehicle scale software for construction materials is connected to RIB 4.0. On-site workers receive all project plans and safety information digitally via RIB Site, eliminating the need for reams of paperwork.

Jorge Correia, foreman and safety officer at Adolf Dürr, now only needs his smartphone to access all the latest information, including project drawings. If his crew is assigned a new or additional task at a different site, he can retrieve those updates immediately—saving the team unnecessary trips.

A major benefit, according to both Constanze Gromer-Etter and Jorge Correia, is the photo documentation feature. Images of current project conditions are instantly available to both office staff and on-site teams.

“Everyone can clearly see what’s been done. This saves us time and travel because we don’t have to inspect everything in person,” says the Managing Director. “It’s a huge advantage, especially when crews rotate.”

Tailored to the company’s needs

Having worked with RIB since 2018, the company collaborates closely with the software provider. RIB supports Adolf Dürr by customizing the system to match its unique workflows.

“RIB 4.0 might seem overwhelming at first glance because of how much it can do,” says Dr. Gromer, “but when it fits your company, the benefits are immense—it’s like a glove that fits perfectly.”

The company plans to expand its use of RIB 4.0 to include workflows such as automatic invoice and credit note imports. They also see future potential in using the software to capture and share sustainability data as part of cost calculations.

Hosting in a German Data Center

Finally, the company values the fact that RIB 4.0 is hosted in a German data center—a factor that enhances security and convenience. One central storage location, one point of contact for IT, regular updates and upgrades, and more.

“We’re really glad we chose RIB 4.0,” concludes Constanze Gromer-Etter.
