Meitingen is in the vicinity of the third largest conurbation in Bavaria and on an important north-south axis.


Meitingen is a small market town in the district of Augsburg, in Bavaria, Germany, with a population of just 11,000. For decades it has suffered from severe traffic congestion with around 25,000 vehicles, mostly commuters, rolling through the town every day. The reason for the congestion is that Meitingen lies in the vicinity of the third largest conurbation in Bavaria and is situated on a major north-south axis.

Potential solutions to easing the traffic flow in Meitingen date back to the 1970s. The design process continued for two decades before finally coming to fruition in 2006 in the shape of the B2 bypass.

Responsibility for the construction of the new by-pass lies with the State Building Department in Augsburg. The roadworks division is responsible for the maintenance of 412 kilometres of national roads, 514 kilometres of state roads and 446 highway engineering projects throughout the regions of Augsburg, Aichach-Friedberg and Donau-Ries.

The State Building Department is reliant on flexible, reliable software to manage the design, tendering, construction, monitoring, invoicing and data management of road and bridge works.

RIB Software's proprietary civil engineering software, STRATIS, was first introduced to the authority in 1993 and since that time has proved its worth on a host of important highway projects, including the B2 bypass.


The Meitingen B2 by-pass is one of the largest construction projects on Federal roads in Bavaria. The project represents the final stage of an ambitious €90 million project that has seen the entire section of the B2 main road from Augsburg to Donauwürth widened to four lanes.

More than €40 million has been spent on construction work on the by-pass and an additional €5 million on land acquisition. The work involved the excavation of 1 million cubic metres of rubble from gravel pits and demolition sites in the region for road embankments, bridge approaches and noise barriers.

During the construction process, an Iron Age settlement was discovered which presented additional challenges for the project. Careful excavation work was performed under the management of the State Building Department to preserve historical artefacts such as jewellery, pottery and iron tools.

The flexibility and modular structure of STRATIS® allows it to be specifically configured for any civil engineering application. Its transparent user interface, consistent data concept and user-friendly Windows functionality enabled the Department to adapt the system to meet all its requirements on the project.
The system's ability to integrate with three-dimensional (3D) digital applications allowed information to be presented visually to residents, helping to resolve local communication issues.

The residents of Meitingen are looking forward to the completion of the new by-pass which will reduce the daily traffic flow to only 6,000 to 7,000 vehicles.
