P.T. McWilliams
Case Study
brief
P.T. McWilliams is one of Ireland's leading civil engineering contractors. Based in Omagh, Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland, the family-owned firm provides a range of specialist construction services for the civil infrastructure sector throughout Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.
Now in its second generation of family ownership since its founding in 1972, P.T. McWilliams employs more than 200 staff and owns an extensive inventory of plant, machinery and equipment.
The company's versatile and innovative approach to civil engineering projects - including roads, bridges, structures, industrial developments, harbours and ports - gives it a unique, competitive edge, supported by impressive financial performance.
A critical success factor within P.T. McWilliams' operation is the company's ability to respond accurately and efficiently to competitive tenders. RIB Software's industry-leading software product - RIB CSuite - was selected by P.T. McWilliams following an evaluation of the software's potential to replace its manual, labour-intensive, spreadsheet-based estimating and reporting systems.
solution
The introduction of RIB CSuite's pre-contract estimating modules has had a dramatic impact on P.T. McWilliams' bid preparation process and proposal success rate. RIB CSuite is being used to develop target prices for major civil infrastructure projects, illustrated by three prestigious project awards for the company.
The A1/N1 Newry to Dundalk Link Road was a 'first-of-a-kind' cross-border scheme involving construction of a 14km stretch of dual carriageway. The £25 million civil construction subcontract was awarded to P.T. McWilliams by SIAC-Ferrovial, an Irish/Spanish joint venture. More than 500,000 cubic metres of granite, 1.3 million cubic metres of cut-and-fill materials and 700,000 cubic metres of peat were excavated on the project.
The N4 McNead's Bridge Project was an £18.5 million contract awarded by the National Roads Authority to construct a 4.5km dual carriageway linking the town of Kinnegad to McNead's Bridge in Mullingar. The road improvement scheme incorporated five structures, one crossing the Dublin to Sligo railway line and another traversing the Royal Canal in County Westmeath. The project also included the construction of several link and access roads as well as lighting, road marking, lighting and landscaping.
The £320 million Victoria Square development in Belfast is one of Europe's largest urban regeneration projects and a milestone in the revitalisation of the city centre. The new scheme includes 75,000 square metres of retail space over three floors, 14,000 square metres of leisure facilities, including a health club, cinema and restaurants, and around 100 residential apartments. P.T. McWilliams' work scope during the construction phase included the excavation of a 12m deep coffer dam covering an area of 20,000 square metres.
result
"RIB CSuite is extremely user-friendly and offers some great benefits. For example, its accuracy and speed of response gives us more time to formulate our winning strategies. It provides my team with more time to think 'outside the box' and to gain a more thorough understanding of major infrastructure project costs. Its multi-currency feature allows us to work in Pounds Sterling and Euros - perfect for pricing our work throughout Ireland.
There is no other product on the market quite like RIB CSuite. Since its introduction, we've won every job we've priced!"
